Toyota unit to build EV charging stations

Toyota Tsusho Corp., the trading company of the Toyota Group, has signed a preliminary agreement with two Chinese companies to build charging stations for electric vehicles in China.

The Chinese companies are China Potevio Co. and Chongqing Changpeng Industry (Group) Co., Toyota said in a statement.

Details about the agreement have yet to be disclosed.

Toyota Tsusho opened a new business unit in 2010 to supply charging facilities and develop components for EVs.

China Potevio, a major state-owned communications equipment maker, is mandated by the Chinese government to provide EV charging stations. It has built and operated charging stations for electric buses and taxis at 57 locations in the south China city of Shenzhen.

Chongqing Changpeng is an interior component supplier headquartered in the southwest China municipality of Chongqing.
