Daimler China exports E-class sedans to Colombia

Beijing Benz Automotive Co., a joint venture between Daimler AG and Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Corp., has shipped 35 stretched Mercedes-Benz E-class sedans to Colombia.

This is the first time the German luxury brand has exported vehicles built in China.

The Chinese joint ventures of Daimler, Audi AG and BMW AG produce long-wheelbase sedans to satisfy wealthy Chinese consumers' appetites for chauffeured driving and roomy backseats.

Beijing Benz builds the stretched Mercedes E-class sedan in a suburb of Beijing. It has a starting price of 465,000 yuan ($73,344).

Beijing Benz also produces the Mercedes C-class sedan and the GLK SUV.

Xu Heyi, chairman of Beijing Benz, hinted that the venture may export vehicles to other overseas markets. "After taking this first step, Beijing Benz will make further efforts to explore the international market," Xu said Dec. 19 at an event organized in Beijing for handing over the vehicles for export.

Xu, also chairman of BAIC, did not offer more details about Beijing Benz's export plans.
