Chinese mainland auto brand Great Wall to debut at Taipei auto show
Sedans, sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and pickup trucks from Great Wall, an automotive brand from the Chinese mainland, will debut at the Taipei International Auto Show, making it the third mainland brand to do so after Geely and Chery displayed at the show two years ago.
Great Wall aims to take a share of Taiwan's recreational and agricultural vehicle market, according to its agent in Taiwan, Versacraft Corporation. The company will conduct a market survey in Taiwan before importing the brand on a large scale.
Great Wall will show its HAVAL H6 SUV, VOLEEX C20R Sedan and Wingle 5 Pickup at the show, Zhou Yingjie, a spokesman for Versacraft, told Xinhua.
Zhou said Great Wall pickups, which are fairly priced and meet Taiwan's environmental and safety standards, are expected to meet market demand.
Pickups in Taiwan are currently sold at relatively high prices, and are mostly from Japanese, European and U.S. brands. Pickups are expected to become second or third vehicles for Taiwanese, and can replace SUVs in major functions, Zhou said, adding that they could also be used as agricultural vehicles.
Great Wall SUVs are also sold at relatively low prices on the Chinese mainland, and are expected to be accepted by Taiwanese consumers, he said.
Headquartered in Baoding, Hebei province, Great Wall Motor Company Limited is the first private whole-vehicle automaker listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, according to the company's website.
The HAVAL SUV and the WINGLE Pickup have both topped sales and export volumes on the Chinese mainland for eight years and 13 years, respectively, the website said.
The 19th Taipei International Auto Show will display nearly 200 new models from 34 brands, including concept cars, electric and hybrid vehicles, sports cars, SUVs and multi-purpose vehicles (MPV). The event is held biannually.
In addition to Taiwan's local brand Luxgen, visitors can also see the latest upscale and unique designs by many foreign brands, including Toyota, Volvo, BMW, Porsche and Saab.
The Dec. 24 - Jan. 1 event is expected to attract about 190,000 visitors.
