Mercedes China sales rise 24% in November

Mercedes-Benz said vehicle sales in China rose 24 percent in November year-on-year to 18,067 units, as demand for luxury cars continued to outperform overall industry sales.

For the first 11 months of 2011, Mercedes sales in China were up nearly 31 percent to 170,112 units.

In November, the automaker's Smart brand sold 1,142 units.

While Mercedes did not provide sales data for November 2010, sales tripled earlier this year after the automaker unveiled a new marketing campaign featuring NBA basketball star Kobe Bryant.

In the first 11 months, Mercedes says it sold more than 10,000 fortwo units in China.

Mercedes has been battling Audi AG -- China's leading luxury brand -- and BMW AG for market share this year. Last summer, all three brands cut prices in an effort to maintain sales momentum.

Audi and BMW have not yet released November sales results.
