Compal to Start Trial Production at Chengdu Plant in Mid-Dec.
Compal Electronics Inc., a major notebook PC contractor in Taiwan, will start small-volume trial-production in mid-December at its new factory in Chengdu, Sichuang Province, China.
Y.C. Chang, Compal`s executive vice president, pointed out that Compal`s Chengdu production base now has two factories to produce notebook PCs, tablet PCs, all-in-one (AIO) PCs, LCD TVs etc. The first factory has entered into final construction and will start trial-production in December, with interim workforce of about 200 to 300 people.
The second factory is ready to start construction, Chang added, and is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2012. In 2013, Compal`s Chengdu base will have annual capacity of over 20 million notebook PCs, with about 20,000 workers.
Ray Chen, Compal`s president, said previously that his company`s PC factory in Chongqing started volume production in July this year with initial monthly output of 300,000 to 400,000 notebook PCs, which will rise to 500,000 to 600,000 in the second quarter of 2012.
By 2012, Compal`s shipments from Sichuang Province (Chongqing and Chengdu) are expected to account for 20% to 25% of the group`s total shipments.
Compal is the most active contractor among Taiwanese counterparts in China, with however growth rate lower than that of major rival Quanta Computer Inc.
Compal shipped 3.2 million notebook PCs in October, lower than market forecast of 3.3 million units, and the company`s shipments in November is expected to slide to only 2.95 million units.
