Shanghai OnStar to offer fast telematics service

Shanghai OnStar Telematics Co. says it is working with Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell Co. to develop faster telematics services using the fourth-generation 4G digital communication network in China.

Shanghai Onstar is a joint venture among GM subsidiary OnStar, Shanghai Automotive Industry Sales Co. and Shanghai GM. Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell is Alcatel-Lucent's China joint venture.

Once the new services become available, the reaction time for Shanghai OnStar's telematics services including automatic crash response, remote door unlock, stolen vehicle location and mobile application will be significantly shortened.

"Test results show that information can be transmitted more than 10 times faster via the 4G network," said Shanghai OnStar in a statement.

Aided by Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell's 4G communications technology, Shanghai OnStar also will offer in-vehicle videoconferencing, remote video monitoring, in-vehicle internet use and video transmission.
