Despite sales jump, BMW trails luxury leader Audi

BMW AG's sales in China jumped 36 percent year-on-year in July to 18,858 vehicles, but China's No. 2 luxury car brand failed to gain on country's luxury leader, Audi.

Audi AG's China sales surged 35 percent in July to 27,455 units.

By contrast, Mercedes-Benz sales in China dropped 2.5 percent to 14,248 units in July as the company switched over to the redesigned C-class sedan.

Mercedes is the No. 3 luxury car brand in China. The three German luxury brands have had strong growth this year as China's luxury segment outperformed the rest of the industry.

All three automakers produce long-wheelbase models in China, and all three have aggressive expansion plans.
