FAW-GM's Harbin plant launches truck output

FAW-GM Light Duty Commercial Vehicle Co. has begun producing the Jiefang L501 light commercial truck at its new plant in the northeast China city of Harbin.

The plant will employ 2,000 workers and initially build as many as 100,000 trucks a year, according to a statement from General Motors Co. If sales are strong, the venture may double production.

The 500,000-square-meter facility includes a press shop, body shop, paint shop and axle shop.

FAW-GM is a 50-50 joint venture between GM China and China FAW Group Corp.

The venture, based in the northeast China city of Changchun, has manufacturing plants in Harbin, Changchun and Qujing, in southwest China.

Last year, FAW-GM sold 88,224 light trucks and vans.
