Chrysler recalls 8,309 Jeep Wranglers in China

China's top consumer product quality watchdog said Friday that U.S. automaker Chrysler will recall 8,309 Jeep Wrangler vehicles sold on the Chinese mainland over potential safety hazards concerning the vehicles' automatic transmissions and related systems.

Defects in the vehicles' transmission systems may cause transmission fluid to overheat, which could lead to fires or other accidents, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) said in a statement on its website.

The AQSIQ suspended imports of Jeep Wrangler vehicles for the same reason in April of this year.

The recall will start from June 1 and includes 7,153 Jeep Wranglers produced between Sept. 1, 2007 and July 9, 2010, as well as 1,156 vehicles produced between July 12, 2010 and Jan. 13, 2011.

Chrysler will offer free repairs for faulty transmission systems. Owners of recalled vehicles may contact the Chrysler China Sales Company at 400-6500-118.
