GM China aims to double sales by 2015
General Motors China plans to double its annual sales to 5 million units by 2015 with the introduction of 60 new and refreshed vehicles, GM China President Kevin Wale said Monday.
GM China, which sold 2.3 million vehicles in 2010, plans to introduce 12 new or upgraded Buicks and 15 Chevrolets. The remaining models will include vehicles for the Cadillac, Wuling, Jiefang and Baojun brands.
GM China will introduce new vehicles annually for the Baojun brand, which will target China's Tier Two and Tier Three cities, Wale said. Wuling, which is China's leading producer of commercial microvans, announced plans last fall to expand into China's entry-level passenger car market with the new Baojun brand.
Wuling's first passenger car, the Baojun 630, will be showcased at the Shanghai auto show.
Cadillac also will have a completely refreshed lineup by 2015, Wale said.
While GM's sales target sounds aggressive, the company has enjoyed blistering growth in recent years. Shanghai GM sales doubled from 1.1 million units in 2008 to 2.3 million units last year, outpacing the industry sales, which grew from 9 million units to just over 17 million units.
"We're more optimistic about the future of the Chinese market," said Wale. "If you look at the history, there is much more potential . We are introducing new brands like Baojun, and we're going to concentrate on introducing luxury vehicles like Cadillac..."
