Toyota cancels extra shifts in China due to shortage of Japanese parts
Toyota Motor Corp. has ordered its Chinese assembly plants to stop working extra shifts because parts production has been disrupted by the March 11 earthquake in Japan.
"Due to the situation with inventories, extra shifts during work days and holidays will be halted," the company said in a statement.
Toyota said normal production shifts will continue uninterrupted in its four vehicle assembly plants and seven parts factories in China.
Toyota's Chinese plants made 773,677 vehicles last year, up 27 percent from 2009.
Toyota is the second Japanese automaker that has cut China production after the earthquake in Japan. Last week, Nissan Motor Co. halted production on weekends and holidays at all of its Chinese factories.
