SAIC Motor to start building plug-in hybrid in 2012

SAIC Motor Co. says it will start mass production of its first alternative energy vehicle -- a gasoline-electric plug-in hybrid -- in 2012 to expand its lineup of electric vehicles.

The plug-in, to be displayed at this month's auto show in Shanghai, is developed on the platform of its Roewe 55 compact sedan, said SAIC Motor in a statement.

Burning 2.7 liters of gasoline for every 100 kilometers, the vehicle can improve energy efficiency by 50 percent compared with the gasoline-powered Roewe 550.

Besides the plug-in Roewe 550, SAIC Motor will display four other alternative energy vehicles at the show including an electric car based on its Roewe 350 compact car, a hydrogen-electric plug-in and two concept electric cars.
