Regulator orders halt of Jeep Wrangler imports
China's state regulator has ordered dealers in the country to suspend imports of Chrysler Group's Jeep Wrangler SUV because of safety concerns.
The order came after several imported Wranglers recently caught fire in China, said China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.
Investigators have concluded that the Wrangler's automatic transmission poses a grave safety risk to vehicle drivers, the administration added in a circular issued Friday ordering the suspension.
Chrysler is working with the administration to identify and fix 2008-10 Wranglers sold in China with automatic gearboxes, the company said in a statement.
In 2010, 2,801 Wranglers were sold in China, according to J.D. Power and Associates.
In February, Chrysler issued a global recall to address possible overheating of transmission fluid in some gearboxes. The fluid could spill onto hot surfaces and cause fires.
Chrysler said it is unaware of any injuries or accidents caused by the defect.
