Volvo AB may build heavy trucks in China

Volvo AB may build Volvo-brand heavy trucks in China through its existing joint venture with Dongfeng Motor Group, said Volvo CEO Leif Johansson.

"We will probably broaden the product offerings, for example by making Volvo trucks," Johansson said in an interview in Stockholm about its Chinese-made trucks.

After 14 years running the Gothenburg, Sweden-based truck maker, Johansson plans to step down as CEO this summer. Volvo AB is the world's second largest maker of heavy trucks, after Daimler AG.

China's market for heavy vehicles has been dominated by domestic companies who price their trucks at a discount to international rivals like Volvo, Daimler or Scania.

But Volvo has had some success selling construction equipment in China. With local partner Lingong, Volvo has become the China's fourth largest provider of wheel loaders and road-building machinery.

Volvo subsidiary UD Trucks, which is based in Japan, has a joint venture in China with Dongfeng Motor Group that sells "a few thousand" vehicles in the country annually, according to Volvo.
