MediaTek, Chinese Manufacturers Jointly Tap Mobile TV Market
MediaTek Inc. co-announced with ZTE Corp. and China Mobile that they will work together to tap mainland China's mobile-TV market, with MediaTek to provide equipment supplier ZTE with chips and ZTE to supply equipment to service provider China Mobile.
Representatives from the three companies made the statement yesterday at a new product presentation held in Taipei addressing ZTE-developed handheld TVs built around China-spearheaded TD-CMMB (Time Division-China Mobile Multimedia Broadcasting) format.
Some institutional investors estimated the cooperation among the three companies would help accelerate acceptance of mobile-TV service in the mainland, as they could create a business model that helps set up convenient charge methods for the service. Inconvenient charge methods have deterred acceptance of the service in the mainland.
In addition to chips for TD-CMMB gadgets, MediaTek, currently Taiwan's No.1 design house of mobile chips, has introduced system-on-chip for analog mobile TV. The analog chip, already in volume production, is a highly integrated chip for this purpose as it incorporates power-management circuit.
Industry executives expected the cooperation to help boost MediaTek's revenue, which is estimated to swing above NT$9 billion (US$281 million) in August.
ZTE executives pointed out that the handheld TD-CMMB TVs the company launched at the presentation were a teamwork achievement by the three companies.
The handheld TVs feature built-in antenna, big screen, and sliding cover.
