Toyota models fell off the list in January as their brand image among Chinese consumers suffered after massive safety recalls in the United States, Europe and Asia.

But over the past seven months, Toyota models such as Camry and Corolla have regained the favor of Chinese consumers.

In July, Camry was the eighth best-selling car model, while Corolla ranked tenth. (See table below.) 

While Toyota has gained favor among consumers, domestic Chinese brands have gradually lost market share.

In January, four domestic brand models – the BYD F3, FAW Xiali, Chery QQ and Brilliance Splendor – ranked first, third, sixth and eighth on the list. But in July, only the F3 stayed on the list, and its rank dropped to seventh.
