GM speeds introduction of hybrids and EVs in China
General Motors Co. says it will unveil a prototype electric car based on the Chevrolet New Sail compact car in China later this year – part of its campaign to create a Chinese lineup of "green" vehicles.
GM says its joint venture, Shanghai General Motors Co., is working on the project. The company disclosed its plans during an EV forum this week at the World Expo in Shanghai.
The gasoline-powered New Sail Chevrolet is a subcompact sedan developed by Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center Co., GM's auto design subsidiary in Shanghai. Its target markets are China and other emerging markets.
In 2011, GM will launch Chinese sales of the Buick LaCrosse hybrid and the Chevrolet Volt plug-in.
"GM continues to introduce the most advanced electric vehicle products and technologies to China," said Kevin Wale, president of the GM China Group.
Wale also noted that GM will conduct research on batteries, electric motors and EV powertrain controls at its new technical center under construction in Shanghai. The center will house 62 test labs and nine research labs.
