Hon Hai making $64 million move to inland China
Hon Hai Precision, Taiwan's leading manufacturing enterprise, has decided to set up new factories in Chengdu and Zhengzhou, according to the Taipei-based China Post.
According to Hon Hai's latest announcement, the company will invest a total of 32 million U.S. dollars in two factories in western China's Chengdu City, and another 32 million U.S. dollars into two plants in Zhengzhou, capital city of central China's Henan Province.
The investment is aimed at meeting growing demand for tablet computers, cell phones and digital set top boxes, according to the announcement.
Edmund Ding, a spokesman for Hon Hai, said the management board would soon submit its first investment plan in Henan and Sichun to local authorities.
Besides the relocation plan, the company also announced on Saturday that it would renew a plan to float 1 billion U.S. dollars in euro-convertible bonds.
In the first half of 2010, a dozen employees of Foxconn, a subsidiary of Hon Hai, attempted suicide, arousing criticism against the plant over its long working hours, low pay and harsh management methods, including physical abuse.
Following the tragedies, Foxconn announced a wide wage hike of over 100 percent for its employees, though analysts are concerned that the rising labor costs will diminish the company's profitability.
Last Friday, Yin Chengji, a spokesman for China's Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, commented that the labor issues at Hon Hai Precision have been "handled well" by the company and the government, adding that wage raises need to be kept within appropriate levels amid a series of labor disputes in the country.
