FAW Car's 2nd plant to begin mass production next quarter
The second assembly plant of FAW Car Co., the automaking subsidiary of China FAW Group Co., will start mass production in the fourth quarter of this year.
The factory was built in the northeast China city of Changchun -- the same location as FAW Car's first assembly plant, according to FAW Group.
With an investment of 1.5 billion yuan ($221 million), the new plant will be able to produce as many as 200,000 vehicles a year. It will build FAW's premium Red Flag models and lower-end Besturn cars.
FAW Car's existing plant can produce as many as 240,000 vehicles a year. The plant builds cars for FAW plus the Mazda6 sedan under a licensing agreement with Mazda Motor Corp.
In the first half of this year, FAW Car sold 129,600 cars, up 72 percent from a year earlier. Red Flags and Besturns accounted for 70,000 sales and 59,600 were Mazda6 models, FAW Group said.
