Saab Chairman says company could build cars in China
Saab Automobile AB could build cars in China if its annual sales volume in the market hits 10,000 units, said company Chairman Victor Muller.
"We hope to be selling 10,000 cars [annually] in China in the next three years," Muller told the Automotive News Europe Congress. "If that happens, we will talk to local manufacturers about production."
Saab will announce new distribution arrangements in China in the next few months, Muller added.
Muller's Spyker Cars NV, a Dutch maker of luxury sports cars, bought Saab from General Motors Co. earlier this year for $400 million in cash and preferred stock.
Saab is targeting sales of 55,000 units this year, short of its break-even sales target of 85,000 units. But the company is rolling out a redesigned 9-5 sedan, a new 9-4X crossover and new 9-3 compact sedan.
Muller said "it would not be presumptuous" to expect global sales of 125,000 units in 2012.
