Quanta may remain largest supplier of NB PCs in May

The Taiwan-based Quanta Computer Inc., a supplier of notebook PCs, posted notebook PC shipment of 4.4 million units in May, likely to keep the runner-up, Compal Electronics Inc., who has yet to announce its May sales performance, away from its leading position in the line in terms of single-month shipment, according to company sources.

Although its notebook PC shipment for May is 100,000 units less than the corresponding figure in April, the firm has still pushed up its aggregate shipment to 8.9 million notebook PCs in the first two months of the second quarter this year, and is expected to attain over 13.4 million units for the entire the quarter, representing a higher quarter-on-quarter growth rate than its original projection of 15-20%.

The firm also reported sales revenue of NT$92.503 billion (US$2.89 billion at US$1: NT$32) for May, slightly down 4.65% from NT$97.015 billion (US$3.03 billion) posted in April.

In the meantime, Quanta's Taiwanese counterpart Wistron Corp., the world's third-largest maker of notebook PCs now, posted notebook PC shipment of 2.2 million units for May, effectively driving up its combined revenue to NT$48.611 billion (US$1.51 billion) in the month, up 10.44% from a month earlier or 25.52% from a year earlier.

Wistron stressed that its shipment has gradually turned strong since the beginning of May, and hence is quite confident of achieving a 10% quarterly growth in its combined revenue for the second quarter. The firm has scored aggregate combined revenue of NT$235.79 billion (US$7.368 billion) for the first five months of this year.

Obviously, the two firms' solid sales and shipment performance so far has been impervious to some negative market factors, such as seasonal recession and the recent euro debt crisis, helping to reduce investors' worries about a tough time for the overall notebook PC industry in the second quarter.
