Survey finds most Chinese consumers would consider buying new energy vehicles

Up to 60 percent of Chinese respondents said they would consider purchasing plug-in hybrids or pure electric vehicles, according to a recent survey conducted by Ernst & Young.

The proportion is nearly five times higher than any other country surveyed, including the United Sates, Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom and France, according to a release from the management consultancy.

Covering 1,000 vehicle owners and people planning to buy cars over the next three years in China, the survey also found 65 percent of respondents in China indicated a willingness to help pay for charging stations within their communities. This percentage was again significantly higher than in most of the other countries surveyed.

Charging stations, battery driving range, reliability and serviceability, and safety were found to be the four most significant consumer concerns about new energy vehicles.

When asked where they would like to recharge the plug-ins or electric vehicles, 76 percent preferred conventional roadside recharging locations, 46 percent indicated residential and apartment communities and 34 percent indicated large public parking areas near places of business.

The survey also found 82 percent of the respondents deemed a range per charge of less than 200 miles to be acceptable for plug-ins and electric cars.
