BYD acquires plant from Japanese die manufacturer Ogihara

BYD Auto Co. will soon acquire a Japan-based plant from Ogihara Corporation, a major Japanese die manufacturer, a spokesperson with the Chinese automaker confirmed to Automotive News China.

The spokesperson declined to provide details on the acquisition. But according to Nihon Keizai Shimbun, a leading Japanese business newspaper, BYD is poised to take over the plant as well as its employees on April 1.

Based in a suburb of Tokyo, the plant mainly produces dies for engine blocks. As one of Ogihara's four plants in Japan, the plant has a workforce of around 80.

After the acquisition, the plant will supply high precision dies for BYD's assemblies in China, the Japanese newspaper reported.

What the Japanese newspaper has reported is "basically correct", said the BYD spokesperson.

The BYD spokesperson also added that the Japanese plant will also serve as a training ground for engineers currently employed by BYD's own die manufacturing plant in Beijing.

Headquartered in Ota-shi, Japan, Ogihara has die manufacturing plants in the United States, the United Kingdom, Thailand, Mexico and China.
