Chery to sell its compact sedans in Brazil
Chery Automobile Co. announced that it will start selling two of its compact sedans in Brazil later this year.
The company did not provide details on the new product launch plan. Its spokesman could not be reached for comments.
But according to Lin Huaibin, an HIS Global Insight analyst in Shanghai, the vehicles should be the flex-fuel version of the Chery A1, and the two-box as well as three-box versions of the Chery A3.
These vehicles will be built at Chery's assembly plant in Uruguay and then sold in Brazil, he said.
Chery has been selling its 1.2-liter Tiggo SUV model in Brazil since September 2009. The vehicle is also built at its Uruguay plant.
In 2008, Chery established its Uruguay assembly plant in partnership with an Argentine company, the Macri Group. The plant has an annual production capacity of 20,000 units, according to information provided by Chery.
Chery does not disclose its sales figures for Brazil in 2009. But it said in a statement posted on its Web site that the Tiggo was among the top 10 best selling SUV models in the market there in December.
"Since Brazil is one of Chery's most important overseas markets, Chery will conduct feasibility analysis on establishing plants in Brazil, taking into account the factors of investment, cost and sales volume," the company said in an earlier press release.
