Taiwanese NB PC Makers to Build Factories in China

With notebook PC brands as HP and Acer setting up operations in China to tap the enormous market, Taiwanese notebook PC makers are also planning to build factories there to more efficiently supply products, according to industry sources.

Quanta Computer Inc., the world's largest notebook PC maker, will reportedly sign a memorandum with Chongqing City Government to build a factory there, which is scheduled to start mass production in the first half of this year to mainly supply HP.

Similarly, Inventec Corp., the fourth-largest notebook PC manufacturer, will sign an MOU with Chongqing City Government to build a factory in the city in the next one to two months, industry insiders believe. In fact, Inventec's board of directors has approved a proposal to build its second factory in China but hasn't decided where or total investment.

Compal Electronics Inc. and Wistron Corp. both plan to set up either new notebook PC factories or R&D centers in China to sharpen competitiveness to prepare for the boom when the global economy fully recovers.

Hon Hai Group, the world's largest EMS (electronics manufacturing service) provider deeply engaged in notebook PC manufacturing, has joined hands with HP in signing an MOU with Chongqing City Government, aiming to build a factory sized 1.2 square kilometers and to employ about 50,000 workers, with a capacity valued at US$10 billion in PCs for HP a year.
