BYD to show two models at Detroit auto show
BYD Auto Co. will display a plug-in hybrid and a pure electric vehicle at the Detroit auto show in January next year.
The plug-in hybrid is the F3DM while the EV is known as the e6, said Jasmine Huang who handles media relations at the Chinese automaker's international division.
According to information released by BYD on its Web site, the F3DM has a range of about 400 kilometers (267 miles) on one tank of fuel, with a maximum speed of 160 kilometers per hour (99 miles per hour). It can also run for 100 kilometers (62 miles) powered by a lithium iron phosphate battery pack alone.
It carries a 1.0-liter gasoline engine.
The e6, an all-electric crossover, also has a range of 400 kilometers. Also powered by a lithium iron phosphate battery pack, it can reach a maximum speed of 160 kilometers per hour ten seconds after being started, the company says.
The batteries used in the two models are both developed by BYD itself.
The F3DM has already been made available in China, but its sales are very limited due to a lack of subsidies for individual buyers.
BYD plans to sell the e6 on the domestic market at the end of this year. In May this year, the company said in a press release it aims to sell both the F3DM and the e6 in the United States in 2011.
"Of the two models, the e6 will be our focal point at the show," Huang said.
