British diagnostic company opens electric car division in California and China
Growing interest in electric vehicles has led a British diagnostic company to add a specialized electric car consultancy division with offices in California and China.
"We've created this division due to the level of enquiries we are getting in the design of electric vehicles," said Richard Wall, managing director of Omitec Automotive Technology Shanghai, in an interview with Automotive News China.
The new electric car consultancy division was opened in March this year, said Wall. He added his company is talking to a number of Chinese automakers, but he declined to name them.
Omitec has also set up a new facility in California. "There is close co-operation between California and Chinese OEs," he said.
Omitec Group was the original diagnostic service provider for the Rover group in the UK. In 2007 the company was asked to help Nanjing MG Automobile Co. with diagnostic tools for the MG brand both in China and in the UK. Today Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp also uses Omitec for its Roewe brand cars.
Global sales for Omitec Group grew from 2.5 million pounds (27.3 million yuan) in 1999 to 25.7 million pounds (281 million yuan) in 2008.
Currently China accounts for 3% of Omitec's global business. In 2010 Wall says he expects this to double.
