GM has no plan to introduce GMC brand into China

Despite the establishment of a light duty commercial vehicle joint venture with China FAW Group Corp. earlier this year, General Motors Co. has no plans to build commercial vehicles under its GMC brand in China, according to GM CEO Fritz Henderson.

"We absolutely have no plans to bring in the GMC brand to China," said Henderson Tuesday at a press conference in Shanghai.

With an investment of 2 billion yuan ($292.8 million), the 50-50 joint venture between GM China and FAW was incorporated in August in Changchun in northeast China's Jilin province.

While continuing to build existing FAW-badged products in China, the new venture "leaves room for the creation of GM derivatives," GM China said in a statement in August, without specifying what derivatives they will be.

According to statistics GM China released last week, the new company FAW-GM Light Duty Commercial Vehicle Co.sold 8,780 light trucks and vans in September.
