Quanta moving to embrace market booms in NB PC industry

Expecting global demand for notebook PCs to stay strong next year, Quanta Computer Inc., the world's largest notebook PC supplier, has been constructing its sixth production plant in China, to embrace the upcoming market booms in the notebook PC industry, according to C.C. Liang, vice president of the firm.

Liang indicated that Quanta has been engaged in improving production and procurement procedures to enhance organizational efficiency since two years ago, and such efforts have helped the firm see its operating incomes of the second quarter surge 48% from the first quarter, and score better-than-expected gross profit rate of 6.2% in the quarter. In addition, the firm is likely to challenge a 30% quarterly growth in its notebook PC shipment in the third quarter.

Industry insiders have projected global shipments of notebook PCs to surge 15-20% in 2010 from 2009, some makers, such as Compal Electronics Inc. and Wistron Corp., already announced their plans to build new plants in China to seize the market booms.

Not to lag behind its rivals in output expansion, Quanta has also kicked off construction of its sixth plant since the beginning of the second half of this year. The new plant is scheduled to be operational before the third quarter of next year and will roll out 1.5 million notebook PCs a month, sufficient enough to meet surging demand in the next two years, said Liang.

In the meantime, Quanta has been dedicated to development of products in line with its new 3C (cloud computing, connectivity and client devices) concept and an innovative optical tough technology, with the latter already widely used in all-in-one PCs. Liang noted that his firm is planning to apply the technology onto communication products and client devices, in a bid to carve out more niches in the future.
