SMIC Made Net Loss Of USD98.1 Million In Q2 2009

Shanghai-headquartered Chinese chip maker Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation has published its performance report for the second quarter of 2009 and states it made revenue of USD267.4 million during the period.

The company said its revenue increased by 85% quarter-on-quarter from USD146.5 million to USD267.4 million, but a year-on-year decrease of 22%. Sales revenue from its wafer products based on the 90-nanometer and 0.13-micrometer technologies increased by 135.3% compared with the previous quarter.

At the same time, its net losses in the second quarter were USD98.1 million, with loss per share of USD0.2196. Its net losses in the first quarter were USD178.3 million. The company attributed the business recovery to the increase of wafer shipments and the improvement of capacity utilization.

In addition, SMIC estimated that its revenue in the third quarter will increase between 14% and 18% over the previous quarter. The company's capital expenditures are estimated at between USD60 million and USD65 million during the same time.
