CNTAC takes steps towards green future

A new lifetime cycle assessment platform for textile products was launched in China, marking a crucial step towards the country's textile and apparel industry reaching its dual carbon goals.

The platform, named LCAplus, was launched by China National Textile and Apparel Council on Thursday. It is expected to help achieve green traceability and value mining of products in the entire value chain from production to consumption.

China has set goals of peaking carbon dioxide emissions before 2030 and realizing carbon neutrality before 2060. The carbon emissions of China's textile and apparel industry stand at about 230 million metric tons annually, accounting for 2.8 percent of the national industrial emissions, CNTAC said.

As a global textile and clothing manufacturing powerhouse, China shoulders a significant responsibility in promoting green production and providing reliable and comparable environmental performance data. Developing scientific and applicable methods and tools has become an inevitable demand for the textile and clothing industry in China, CNTAC said.

As an important tool for promoting green and low-carbon consumption, carbon labeling of products has become one of the most effective means to guide green production and consumption.

"Finding ways to scientifically label products with reliable carbon labels has become a concern for more domestic enterprises," said Yan Yan, director of social responsibility at CNTAC.

"So far, the China Textile Information Center has completed on-site data collection and the evaluation of 32 brands and 102 textile products throughout the entire supply chain in China. Domestic companies have continued to make efforts in doing lifetime cycle assessments of textile products," Yan said.

Meanwhile, the center has completed its first measurement and traceability of the full data in the supply chain of T-shirts made by cotton produced in Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, as well as the first carbon footprint assessment of China's business casual men's clothing.
