Boston-based Cabot (NYSE: CBT) developed the plant in China's Jiangxi Province through its Cabot China Ltd. subsidiary, which partnered with Blue New Chemical Materials Co. Ltd., a member of the ChemChina Group.

The plant has an annual capacity of 4,800 metric tons, the company stated. Fumed silica is a material used in the manufacture of optical fiber for telecommunications.
Aside from fumed silica, Cabot Corp. also specializes in carbon black, which is used to reinforce rubber and in paints, inks and polishes. The company last year lost $48 million on $2.1 billion in sales.
