Kia venture's deliveries advance 48%
Sales at Dongfeng Yueda Kia, Kia Motors’ joint venture with Dongfeng Motor Group, gathered steam in January, jumping 48 percent to 45,884.
The sales surge was led by the Kia Pegas subcompact car. Pegas deliveries nearly tripled to 7,432 last month, according to Dongfeng Yueda Kia.
In January, sales of the Sportage, Kia’s top-selling model in China, reached 16,302. Deliveries of the Kia K3 compact sedan also approached 8,000.
Dongfeng Yueda Kia didn’t reveal sales tallies of other models in January.
In 2019, the company plans to launch three new products: the redesigned KX5 compact crossover as well as plug-in hybrid and full electric vehicle versions of the K3.
Deliveries at Beijing Hyundai -- Hyundai Motor Co.’s joint venture with BAIC Motor Group -- surged 47 percent to 110,316 last month.
Despite the big jump in January volume, the two Korean brands still operate well below production capacity in China.
Dongfeng Yueda Kia operates three plants in the east China city of Yancheng that can produce up to 900,000 vehicles a year under the Kia brand.
Beijing Hyundai has five plants in China, which combined can build 1.65 million vehicles a year at full capacity.
In 2018, Dongfeng Yueda Kia’s deliveries rose 2.8 percent to roughly 370,000 while Beijing Hyundai’s sales edged up 0.7 percent to around 790,000.
