Honda localizes transmission output for hybrid vehicles
Honda Motor Co. started building continuously variable transmissions for hybrid vehicles in China to ramp up local green vehicle output.
The CVT, specifically designed for Honda’s Sport Hybrid powertrain for hybrid vehicles, is being produced at Honda’s wholly owned transmission plant in Foshan in south China’s Guangdong province.
Aside from the CVT, the Sport Hybrid features a 2.0-liter gasoline engine, two electric motors and a lithium ion battery back.
The locally produced CVT will be first installed in the redesigned Honda Accord sedan and adopted in Honda’s other hybrid vehicles at a later stage, Honda said.
In 2016, Honda began assembling cars equipped with the Sport Hybrid powertrain in China, with CVTs imported from Japan.
In addition to the hybrid Accord, the Japanese carmaker builds hybrid versions of the Spirior sedan and CR-V crossover locally.
Honda plans to roll out more than 20 hybrids, plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles by 2025. It is set to launch production of its first electric car at the end of this year.
In the first eight months of the year, Honda’s China sales declined 7.1 percent to 832,248 vehicles.
