CATL to develop batteries for SAIC-GM's electrified vehicles
SAIC-General Motors, GM’s passenger vehicle joint venture with SAIC Motor Corp., signed up Chinese battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology to develop batteries for its electrified vehicles.
Under the deal signed on August 31, SAIC-GM and Contemporary Amperex Technology will collaborate and develop next-generation batteries for SAIC-GM’s electrified vehicles, SAIC said.
“The move will expedite the fast development of new energy vehicles at SAIC-GM,” SAIC added.
SAIC-GM produces and markets vehicles for GM’s Cadillac, Buick and Chevrolet brands. To date, it has launched sales of two electrified vehicles, the Cadillac CT6 plug-in hybrid sedan and the Buick Velite 5 extended-range electric vehicle.
SAIC-GM plans to roll out eight additional electrified vehicles by 2020. Among them, the first two to arrive on the Chinese market will be the plug-in hybrid version and the full electric version of the Buick Velite 6.
SAIC-GM operates a battery assembly plant in Shanghai to supply its expanding electrified vehicle lineup. It is GM’s second battery assembly facility worldwide, following a plant in Brownstown, Mich.
CATL, based in Ningde in east China’s Fujian province, is China’s largest EV battery manufacturer and supplies batteries to a wide range of domestic and global automakers.
In July, CATL signed deals with BMW Group and BMW Brilliance -- BMW’s joint venture with Brilliance China Automotive Group Holdings -- to build EV batteries for the German luxury carmaker in Germany and China.
