Nissan starts China output of Sylphy EV
Nissan Motor Co. has become the first global automaker to produce a full-electric vehicle in China under its proprietary brand, with the start of Sylphy EV output.
The first full-electric Sylphy compact sedan rolled off the production line at Dongfeng Nissan Passenger Vehicle Co.’s Huadu plant in the south China city of Guangzhou, Nissan said.
Dongfeng Nissan is Nissan’s joint venture with Dongfeng Motor Co.
The electric Sylphy is being produced specifically for China. It was developed on the same platform as Nissan’s Leaf EV.
Fitted with an 80-kilowatt electric motor and powered by lithium ion batteries, the Sylphy has a range of 338 kilometers (210 miles) on one charge.
By the end of 2019, Dongfeng Nissan will roll out five EVs under the Nissan, Dongfeng and the joint venture’s proprietary Venucia brands, according to Nissan.
Among other global automakers, only General Motors and Volkswagen Group have started producing EVs in China, but the EVs are not marketed under the brands of their respective joint ventures.
GM builds and sells the Baojun-badged two-seat E100 micro electric car at its light-vehicle joint venture with SAIC Motor Corp., while VW produces and markets the Sol-brand E20X electric compact crossover at a partnership with Jianghuai Automobile Co.
