Great Wall to launch first vehicle under EV brand Ora

Great Wall Motor Co., China’s largest light truck maker, will start selling the first Ora-badged electric vehicle at the Chengdu auto show on Aug. 31 to expand its electrified vehicle lineup.

The Ora brand, unveiled at the Beijing auto show in April, targets young customers in major Chinese cities. Its product lineup will be priced below 100,000 yuan ($14,556), Great Wall said.

The brand’s first product, the Ora iQ, is a compact electric crossover. It is fitted with lithium ion batteries supplied by U.S. battery maker Farasis Energy and electric motor provided by BorgWarner Inc. and has a range of 360 kilometers on one charge.

Great Wall plans to roll out four electric vehicles under the Ora brand by 2020. The next Ora-badged vehicle is the R1 subcompact car, which is set to arrive in January 2019.
Great Wall said it will open Ora dealerships in 72 domestic cities before the end of this year.

Great Wall mainly produces SUVs, crossovers and pickups. It markets only two electrified models – the EV version of the Great Wall-badged C30 compact car and the Wey-brand P8 plug-in hybrid SUV.

As the Chinese government prepares to enact a carbon credit program to goad automakers to ramp up alternative energy vehicle production, Great Wall is expanding its electrified vehicle output to comply with regulatory requirements.

In July, it signed an agreement with BMW Group to form a 5.1 billion-yuan ($739 million) joint venture to build electric vehicles in the east China city of Zhangjiagang. The partnership is due to launch its first product in 2021.

Great Wall, headquartered in the north China city of Baoding, is listed in Hong Kong and Shanghai. In the first seven months, it delivered 525,849 vehicles, a decline of 0.8 percent from the same period last year.
