Toyota to build electrified vehicles in Tianjin
Toyota Motor Corp. will renovate one of its assembly plants in the north China port city of Tianjin to build electrified vehicles.
The 1.8 billion yuan ($263 million) renovation project was approved by the Tianjin city government’s economic planning agency, according to the Tianjin Construction Project Information website, which invites bids for the project.
The renovation is to begin in September and be completed in March. After renovation, the factory will be able to assemble 110,000 plug-in hybrids and 10,000 full-electric vehicles a year, the website reported.
The website provided no further information about products to be built at the factory, which belongs to Toyota’s joint venture with China FAW Group Corp.
Toyota produces only gasoline vehicles and gasoline-electric hybrids in China.
The Chinese government is due to enact a carbon credits program next year to push automakers to ramp up output of electrified vehicles.
To meet the regulatory requirement, Toyota plans to start producing two plug-in hybrids in China in 2019 -- the plug-in hybrid version of the Corolla at its joint venture with FAW and the plug-in variant of the Levin at its partnership with GAC Motor Co.
In 2020, the Japanese carmaker will launch two locally produced full-electric variants of its C-HR subcompact crossover in China.
For the first five months of this year, Toyota delivered 562,200 vehicles in China, an 8.7 percent increase from the same period last year.
