Geely Auto launches flagship sedan with Volvo tech
Geely Automobile Holdings started selling a new flagship sedan last week that features powertrain technologies the company developed with Volvo Car Corp.
The compact car, the Borui GE, was designed by Geely Auto’s design team led by Peter Horbury, Volvo’s former design chief. It offers two powertrains: a plug-in hybrid and a gasoline model fitted with a 48-Volt system, Geely Auto said.
The Borui GE is 4,986 mm (196.3 inches) long, 1,861 mm (73.3 inches) wide and 1,315 mm (51.8 inches) tall, with a wheelbase of 2,870 mm (113 inches).
The plug-in hybrid Borui GE has a starting price of 166,800 yuan ($26,063) after government subsidies. The powertrain features a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, electric motors and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
The plug-in hybrid has a fuel consumption rating of 1.6 liters per 100 kilometers (147 mpg). Powered by batteries only, the plug-in hybrid can drive for 60 kilometers on one charge.
It is the third electrified vehicle Geely Auto has developed, following plug-in hybrid and electric versions of the Emgrand car.
The Borui GE featuring a 48-Volt system is priced from 136,800 yuan and above. It consumes 5.8 liters of gasoline per km, which improves fuel economy 15 percent over the traditional gasoline version, according to Geely Auto.
The company plans to launch more than 30 electrified and energy saving vehicles by 2020.
Geely said it aims to derive 90 percent of its annual sales from hybrids, plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles by 2020.
Geely Auto, based in the east China city of Hangzhou and listed in Hong Kong, is a subsidiary of Zhejiang Geely Holding Group. Zhejiang Geely also owns Volvo Car.
