BYD joins U.S. supplier to develop fuel cell bus
BYD Co., China's largest electrified vehicle maker, is collaborating with US Hybrid Corp., a California component supplier for alternative energy commercial vehicles, to develop a hydrogen fuel cell electric bus for Hawaii.
The fuel cell bus will be based on BYD’s electric bus platform and utilize US Hybrid’s fuel cell technology.
The bus will be assembled at BYD’s plant in Lancaster, Calif., with fuel cells shipped from US Hybrid’s plant in South Windsor, Conn.
It will be used at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu, BYD said, without disclosing additional details about the vehicle.
BYD assembles buses and other EVs in China, California, Scotland and Brazil, and is building plants in Hungary, France and Ecuador.
In the first quarter, it delivered nearly 111,800 vehicles, which include roughly 82,100 gasoline models and 29,600 electrified vehicles, in the first quarter.
BYD, based in the south China city of Shenzhen, is listed in Hong Kong and Shanghai. It is partly owned by U.S. billionaire Warren Buffett.
US Hybrid, of Torrance, Calif., specializes in the design and production of powertrain components for electric, hybrid, and fuel cell trucks, buses, and specialty vehicles.
