Magna, GAC unit team up to make composite liftgates
Magna International established a joint venture with a component subsidiary of Guangzhou Automobile Co. to produce composite liftgates in the central China city of Changsha.
The partnership with GAC Component Co. is set to start production toward the end of 2018. The 55,900 square-foot (5,193 square-meter) factory will make liftgates for a global automaker's crossover model, Magna said this week without identifying the customer.
Composite liftgates are lightweight and recyclable. Compared with steel liftgates, they can achieve up to 25 percent mass savings while allowing for greater design flexibility with deeper draws and tighter radii, the Canadian supplier said.
Magna has established 50 plants in China that produce automotive exteriors, body structures and chassis, powertrain and vision components as well as locks and seats.
