Panasonic opens battery plant in Dalian to supply electrified vehicles
Panasonic Corp. opened a plant in the northeast China port city of Dalian to build prismatic lithium ion batteries for conventional hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles in China and North America.
The 900 million yuan ($142 million) factory is the company’s first production site for prismatic lithium ion automotive batteries in China.
The plant, which employs around 500, will expand production to supply markets other than China and North America, said Panasonic, without revealing further details about the factory.
Before Panasonic, two Korean battery makers -- LG Chem and Samsung SDI -- had opened plants in China to produce batteries for electrified vehicles.
