VW brand's January sales rise on strength of crossovers; Audi deliveries increase
Volkswagen brand’s January deliveries in China increased 9.7 percent year on year to 296,900 vehicles, led by the Tiguan and Teramont crossovers.
The brand sold 31,000 Tiguans and 11,900 Teramonts last month in China, Volkswagen Group said, without revealing China sales of other VW brand models.
Audi’s January sales in China, meanwhile, totaled 60,688 vehicles, a 73 percent rally from the year-earlier month when the luxury brand’s attempt to open a second distribution network prompted dealers to stop ordering new vehicles. Audi halted its plan in May.
For the VW brand, China has long been the largest market. In January, the brand’s global sales rose 7.1 percent from a year earlier to 533,550 vehicles. China accounted for nearly 56 percent of the volume.
To boost market share, the VW brand plans to introduce at least four crossover and SUV models this year in China, said Stephan Wollenstein, the brand’s China chief, in November at the Guangzhou auto show.
