Webasto to build sunroof plant in Wuhan
German supplier Webasto began construction of a 300 million yuan ($46 million) factory in the central China city of Wuhan to expand panoramic sunroof output for automakers in China.
The plant, with a floor area of 67,000 square meters (721,182 square feet), will start production late next year.
After ramping up production, the factory will have the capacity to produce up to 2 million sunroofs annually in 2021. That, in turn, would raise Webasto’s annual sunroof production capacity in China to 10 million units.
The new factory initially will supply assembly plants in central China run by General Motors, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, PSA Peugeot Citroen and a small Chinese automaker, Zoyte Automobile Co.
Later on, the plant also will supply Renault SA, Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd. and Great Wall Motor Co.
In May, Webasto opened a factory in the north China city of Baoding to supply Great Wall, increasing its network of Chinese sunroof plants to 11 facilities.
