Volvo deliveries surge behind locally built models

Volvo Car Corp.'s China deliveries jumped 50 percent year on year to 9,267 vehicles in July, led by strong sales of three locally produced models -- the XC60, S90 and the elongated S60.

Volvo didn't release sales results for individual models in China last month.

In the first seven months of the year, the Swedish brand's China sales advanced 31 percent from a year earlier to 61,181 vehicles.

Volvo has launched four locally built models in China: the XC60 crossover and S60 sedan produced at its plant in the southwest city of Chengdu, and the stretched S90 sedan and the first generation XC90 crossover assembled at its factory in the northeast city of Daqing.

It will also produce the new XC40 at a newly constructed plant in Luqiao in east China’s Zhejiang province. The XC40 is expected to go on sale in China later this year.

Local production allows a global automaker such as Volvo to avoid paying China’s hefty 25 percent customs duty on imported vehicles.

While producing vehicles for the local market, Volvo plans to make China an export hub. In 2015, it started exporting the long-wheelbase S60 to the United States from the Chengdu plant. This year, it has started shipping the S90 to the U.S. and Europe from the Daqing factory.
