BYD to supply electric buses to Los Angeles transit agency

BYD Co. says it has landed a contract to supply 60 electric buses worth $45 million (302 million yuan) to the Los Angeles County public transit operator.

The 12-meter-long (39-foot-long) electric buses will be built at the Chinese company’s plant in Lancaster, Calif., which is undergoing an expansion.

When the expansion is completed in September, the factory will be able to assemble 1,500 electric vehicles a year at full capacity, from 350 now. Its 700-member work force is expected to double, the company said.

In addition to California, BYD builds EVs, including buses, in China, Scotland and Brazil. It has stepped up construction of overseas assembly plants, and is building factories in Hungary, France and Ecuador. Its overseas plants mainly build electric buses.

In 2016, the company delivered 100,183 EVs and plug-in hybrids globally, a jump of 70 percent year on year. Its electric bus sales topped 10,000 vehicles last year, surging 121 percent from a year earlier, according to the China Passenger Car Alliance, a Shanghai consultancy.

BYD, headquartered in the south China city of Shenzhen, is listed in Hong Kong and Shanghai. It is partly owned by U.S. billionaire Warren Buffett.
