Light-vehicle sales jump 11% in May on crossover, MPV surge
China's light-vehicle market is gaining momentum on robust demand for crossovers and multipurpose vehicles, with May sales advancing 11 percent year on year to nearly 1,793,000 vehicles.
Crossover and SUV volume surged 36 percent from a year earlier to around 627,200 vehicles. Deliveries of MPVs jumped 28 percent to roughly 180,100 vehicles, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers said.
Sedan sales edged up 1.5 percent to approximately 921,400 vehicles.
But microvan deliveries slumped 37 percent to around 64,300 vehicles, with rural car shoppers -- the main buyers of microvans -- abandoning microvans for MPVs.
For the year to date, light-vehicle sales in China rose 7.8 percent from a year earlier to 9,258,200 vehicles on stronger volumes for crossovers and MPVs.
