Continental plans brake plant, r&d center in Chongqing

German supplier Continental AG will build a 600 million yuan ($91 million) brake plant and technical center in Chongqing to establish a presence in western China, the Nikkei Asian Review, a business publication, reported.

The factory will produce foundation brake components as well as electronics for parking assist and other functions. The plant initially will employ 600 workers when it launches production in the first half of 2017, according to Nikkei.

Within a decade or so, the plant will employ several thousand workers.

The r&d center, which will open in 2018, will design componentry for electric vehicles. Nikkei reports that it will house 1,000 researchers in 2025.

Although China's new-vehicle sales have cooled over the last year, Continental appears committed to the market for the long haul. In November, the company announced plans for a 1.7 billion yuan expansion of its tire factory in the east China city of Hefei.

Continental produces tires, telematics, brakes, stability control systems, safety electronics and other components in China. The German supplier now has 25 plants and 15 r&d centers in China, with a work force of more than 23,000 people.
