Chinese brands' inventories rise in April due to weak sedan sales

Dealership stockpiles of domestic Chinese brands averaged 60 days in April, up from 53 days in the previous month, according to the China Automobile Dealers Association.

The association blamed high inventories on stagnating sedan sales of domestic Chinese carmakers in the face of foreign competition.

In the first four months of this year, Chinese brands' share of the domestic sedan market dropped by 2.9 percentage points from a year earlier to 19.6 percent, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

In April, inventories of foreign-brand vehicles built in China edged up to 44 days, from 43 days in March.

But stockpiles of imported vehicles declined to 46 days from 53 days in the previous month.

As a result, dealership stockpiles across China dipped to 46 days in April from 47 days in March.

Last month, SAIC Motor Corp.'s Roewe brand had the highest dealership inventories, with an 84-day backlog. It was followed by Kia, which had a 69-day stockpile. FAW was third highest with a 66-day supply.
