Audi's China sales fall, Mercedes' soar in December
Audi AG failed to meet its China sales goal of 600,000 vehicles in 2015, as sales for the year dropped 1.4 percent from a year earlier to 578,932.
The company has not yet recovered from China's summer slowdown. In December, Audi sales fell 3.8 percent year on year to 60,197 vehicles.
By contrast, Mercedes-Benz deliveries in China jumped 31 percent year on year in December to 37,771 vehicles. And sales of Mercedes and Smart cars for the full year shot up 33 percent to 373,459 vehicles.
Mercedes remains the No. 3 luxury manufacturer in China behind Audi and BMW, which has not yet announced December sales. In the first 11 months, BMW and Mini deliveries rose 4.8 percent to 435,090 vehicles.
While Mercedes still trails Audi and BMW, it was the big story in China's luxury market. Last year, Mercedes launched 15 new or updated models and expanded its dealership network to 500 stores.
The company launched local production of two crossovers, the GLA and GLC, and it expanded production of the long-wheelbase E-class sedan, which generated record sales of 58,286.
In a written statement, Mercedes-Benz noted that China has become its biggest market, ahead of the United States and Germany.
